Hospital Chains Settle Class Action Lawsuits for Overcharging Uninsured Patients

Hundreds of thousands of patients to receive reimbursements and refunds

In July and August 2006, hundreds of thousands of uninsured patients of Catholic Healthcare West and Sutter Hospitals won significant discounts and refunds under class action lawsuits filed by Lieff, Cabraser, Heimann and Bernstein in San Francisco.

The lawsuits charged that these hospitals charged uninsured patients rates that were far higher than those paid by insured patients. The hospitals also aggressively pursued these high hospital bills through collection agencies and court, causing some patients to file for bankruptcy.

Patients who were treated by these hospitals may seek payment refunds and:

  • may benefit even if they have not paid their hospital bills, as their debt will be reduced;
  • information provided in their claim forms will not be used for debt collections purposes.
