Whether it is the battles health advocates face with regard to the state and federal budgets, at the ballot box, or in advancing legislative bills, organizations must strengthen partnerships to defend past victories and move forward to expand access to health care for the people we collectively represent. We urge all organizations that support quality, affordable health care for all to join dozens of other groups in becoming a member of Health Access California for 2006.

Our goal at Health Access California is to provide organization with information, materials, relationships, and resources to assist them in advocating around health care issues for their constituencies . We provide up-to-the-minute e-mail updates and alerts on health policy developments, as well as fact sheets, talking points, and analyses of legislation and ballot propositions. We develop policy proposals and organize public campaigns in support of policy solutions to help you engage your constituents around health care issues. For a sample of the resources we provide, please visit our website at http://www.health-access.org.

We need a broad coalition of support to preserve access to health care, expand coverage to more Californians, and protect consumers against abuses by insurers, hospitals, and prescription drug companies. In 2006, we need to:
  • Protect access to health care by defending Medi-Cal and our safety-net hospitals against budget cuts; supporting new revenues to fund these programs; and stopping federal proposals to cap Medicaid. We will need to oppose spending cap proposals and other efforts in Sacramento, and on the ballot, to “starve the public sector” and the public insurance programs that provide critical health care to millions of Californians.
  • Expand coverage to the more than 6 million uninsured Californians. The closeness of the vote on Proposition 72 has created additional momentum for a discussion of health care reform. We are excited about the increased interest in a range of health coverage proposals, from expanding child health programs, to universal single-payer health care.
  • Provide consumer protections to both the insured and uninsured. We will have new opportunities to stop the practice of hospital overcharging of the uninsured, to assist California seniors and families in obtaining more affordable prescription drugs, to prevent discrimination against individuals purchasing health insurance based on situation or illness, to provide oversight of rising out-of-pocket costs, and to ensure cultural and linguistic access to care for the state’s diverse populations.
We hope our member organizations take full advantage of our research, organizing, coalition-building, public education, and advocacy. Membership to Health Access California – both the contribution and the commitment – gives us the resources to effectively assist organizations in their health advocacy work, and to win policy victories on behalf of health care consumers.
