Home Expanding Coverage Fostering a New Debate for Health Care Reform right arrowMassachusetts’ Health Care Law

In 2006, Massachusetts made headlines with its passage of a comprehensive health reform bill, which included both an employer and individual mandate. California's efforts, which captured policymakers' attention in 2007 and 2008, has drawn frequent comparisons with the Massachusetts legislation. Because it's important to understand how and why reforms were crafted and deliberated, in context, Health Access has published several discussion papers and fact sheets comparing the two states, which can be found below:

* In-Depth Paper: Massachusetts' Health Care Law Model, Mirage, or Momentum? (June 2006)
* One-page Analysis: Massachusetts Style Reform in California? (November 2006)
* Beyond Guaranteed Issue: Many Consumer Protections Needed in the California Individual Market (August 2007)
* Health Reform in California & Massachusetts: Different from Start to Finish (January 2008)
