Community Organizer, Northern CA – Oakland, CA

Position Summary:

Health Access seeks an experienced community and/or political organizer to staff our Oakland office, and coordinate our Northern California activities such as coordinating regional coalitions, campaigns, actions, and events in support of our goal to defend and expand access to health care.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate regional health coalitions, including maintaining relationships with key members and informing them of developments in Sacramento and Washington, DC;
  • Organize press conferences, actions, and events to support statewide issue campaigns;
  • Serve as a regional spokesperson for the organization, including giving presentations to groups, and testimony at public hearings;
  • Outreach to community leaders and key organizations;
  • Formulate and execute strategy and tactics in political issue campaigns;
  • Recruit new members and affiliates to the coalition;
  • Identify and work with uninsured families, immigrants, seniors, and patients;
  • Develop grassroots leaders to be active on health care issues;
  • Assist in research, fundraising, and other organizational operations;

Supervisory Responsibilities:
None

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • At least three years of experience in community and/or political organizing;
  • The ability to work independently;
  • Good organization, writing, public speaking, and computer skills; and
  • General familiarity with health care issues and California state politics
  • Bi-lingual skills a plus.

Language and Communication Skills:

  • Read and comprehend general instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Write professional correspondence.
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to executives and employees of the organization, as well as individuals outside the organization.
  • Ability to collaborate, lead teams, and drive complex decision making processes.
  • Analytical approach to problem-solving.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.

Lead Organizer - It's Our Healthcare Coalition

Position Summary:

Health Access seeks an experienced community and/or political organizer to serve as Lead Organizer responsible for coordinating the field activities of the It’s Our Healthcare Coalition; a statewide coalition of partner organizations working to expand access to quality, affordable health care for all Californians. The position may be based in either our Oakland or Los Angeles office.

Specific responsibilities include:

The IOHC Lead Organizer would coordinate activities around the state to keep advocates informed about legislative reform efforts and legislation of interest to health advocates. The position would:
 

    • Maintain regular contact with nine existing regional coalitions.
    • Convene regional, in-person meeting with existing coalitions.
    • Coordinate efforts with the Having Our Say coalition sponsored by the California Pan-Ethnic Health Network and their project organizer.
    • Maintain a statewide advocacy calendar to keep advocates informed of regional and statewide activities.
    • Organize press conferences, actions, and events to support statewide issue campaigns.
    • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization, including giving presentations to groups, and testimony at public hearings.
    • Recruit new members and affiliates to the coalition.
    • Assist in research, fundraising, and other organizational operations.

May supervise interns and volunteers as available

Qualifications and Requirements:

Online Organizer

Position Summary:
Health Access seeks an experienced Online Organizer to work with internal and coalition member staff to do online outreach with the goal of driving new traffic to our website(s), increasing the number of online advocates, expanding our education and advocacy efforts to reach new audiences, and encouraging individuals and organizations to become participants in the work of Health Access.  The position may be based in either our Oakland or Sacramento office.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Work as part of our organizing staff to develop a dynamic online outreach and marketing program that will increase visibility and effectiveness.
  • Distribute online action alerts, e-newsletters, and other updates.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain online lists.
  • Implement benchmarks, gather data, analyze results (click-throughs, response rates, tell-a-friend), and increase site traffic through search engines and other online strategies.
  • Help develop and manage promotional and visibility efforts such as viral campaigns and online advertising.
  • Work with internal and coalition staff to ensure message consistency across all online platforms.
  • Stay on top of new developments in web and online strategies.
  • Assist in research, fundraising, and other organizational operations.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • At least two years experience doing successful online organizing and outreach.
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop).
  • Good understanding of online organizing techniques and technologies.
